Greater Grand Crossing Goes to Yoga

Yesterday, the Summer Service Partnership participants took a yoga class. We have been exploring various ways to stay healthy, so trying yoga fit right into our plans. Yoga was especially relevant to the Grand Crossing team because we are interested in stress reduction, and yoga is a well known way to manage stress.
Iysha and Bennie had done yoga during P.E. at Gary Comer College Prep. Iysha said, "Yoga was very soothing." Bennie thought the yoga class was, "Painful but beneficial." Taniqua had never done yoga before. She said, "It was fun. It made me feel relaxed." Jason thought yoga was, "A really cool experience because it makes you really relaxed. It makes your whole body feel rested and at ease." Sarah thought the class was great and was really happy to see everyone from Grand Crossing put their best effort in to the class. Everyone agreed that they would do yoga again if given the chance. We liked how Cecily, the yoga teacher, taught us with a good mix of seriousness and humor. She had a very soothing voice and gave directions very clearly.
Thank you, Cecily!

  1. Are there any other kinds of physical activity or sports that we would like to try as a group? Let's think of some fun stuff!
If we like stress reduction, we could also try to do something like meditation as a whole group. What do you think?

  2. I think it would be awesome to take everyone to the gym at some point. I know we might not be able to get everyone in to Ratner because of insurance issues, but I'm still clinging to the dream. Some people could play basketball, some could learn to use the weights, Sam could teach people to erg, and other people could use the elliptical. It would be really fun!
I also think it would be great to have a group bonding experience on the lake path. Some people could go for a run, others could go for a long walk, and afterwards we could all gather together at The Point to celebrate our athletic successes.
We could definitely all go to a park and play tennis and basketball. Iysha will teach you to double dutch, Becky! That would be really fun. We just need to find a way to encourage everyone to participate even if it's hot...
